gilb. Gerrard esq., Attorney-General, who prosecutes for the Queen and gives
the Court to understand and be informed that John Rambridge (acknowledges)
of London, clerk, 8 april 3 Elizabeth [1561], at Borley voluntarily said and
celebrated one private mass ... of which the said John at the next General
Sessions after 8 April, before John Earl of Oxford, Lord Chemberlain,
Edward, Bishop of London, rich. Weston, Justice of queen's Bench, Ralph
cholmely, serjeant-at-law, Thomas Wrothe, kt., Thomas Smyt, kt., peter
Mewtas, knight and Edward Bockyng, esq., at Brentwood, stands indicted. and
further the Attorney-General informs that Edward Waldegrave (acknowledges)
of borley, kt., the Lady Frances his w. (acknowledges), Thomas wyborde of
Borley, gent., George Felton (acknowledges) of pentlow, gentleman and
William Oldwyn of Borley were present at the celebration of the aforesaid
mass. Whereupon the Attorney General prays advice of the Court in the
premises and that due legal process may be made against John rambridge etc.

Miscellaneous According to Kelly's Directories of Essex , 1886-1937 the
North Hinckford Petty Sessional Division comprised the following parishes
for this period: Ashen, Belchamp Otten, Belchamp St. Paul, Belchamp Walter,
Birdbrook, Borley, Bulmer, Steeple Bumpstead, Foxearth, Gestingthorpe,
Castle Hedingham, Sible Hedingham, Liston, Great Maplestead, Ovington,
Pentlow, Ridgewell, Stambourne, Sturmer, Tilbury-juxta-Clare, Toppesfield,
Great Yeldham and Little Yeldham. Little Maplestead was also part of this
division until c.1886. By 1890 it formed part of the South Hinckford
Division (Halstead Bench) and was later part of the new Halstead Division
created in 1905.
253 D/DU 2062/2/1 Diary Diary of the Reverend H. D. E. Bull, from his ordination on 30th May 1858. The diary covers his incumbency of the post of deacon of Holy Trinity, Ely. It also contains occasional references to Pentlow, where his father [the Reverend Edward Bull] was the vicar and frequent references to visits to London, Cambridge and Newmarket and short holiday in Dieppe in Agust 1859. The writer reflects on his career following his appointment as a minister, on 16 November 1859; entries between 25 November 1859 and 22 March 1860 relate to period in Hastings, East Sussex [as curate?]; mentions an inquest "on the body of male child found in John Ewers pond" 22 June 1860. Henry Dawson Ellis Bull later held the living of Borley for the period 1862-1892 (J. A. Venn, Alumni Cantabrigienses) 1858-1860
